He earned his B.Ed. from St. Patrick\u2019s College, The Natl. University of Ireland and his PhD from Harvard, and taught at Reed College and Wesleyan University before coming to UC Santa Barbara. He is the author of <em>The Subaltern Ulysses<\/em> (Minnesota, 1996) and <em>The Speed Handbook: Velocity, Pleasure, Modernism<\/em> (Duke, 2009), which won the Modernist Studies Association Prize as the best book in modernist studies in 2010. With Maurizia Boscagli, he is co-editor of <em>Joyce, Benjamin and Magical Urbanism<\/em> (European Joyce Studies, Vol. 25, 2011), and editor of editions of the short stories of Katherine Mansfield and Joyce\u2019s <em>Ulysses<\/em>. He has published numerous essays on modernist culture, Irish writing and critical theory in such journals as <em>Modernism\/Modernity<\/em>, <em>Modernist Cultures<\/em> , <em>The James Joyce Quarterly<\/em> and <em>Critical Quarterly<\/em>, and in edited collections such as <em>Semi-Colonial Joyce<\/em>, <em>Marketing Modernisms<\/em>, <em>The Cambridge Companion to<\/em> Ulysses, <em>The Contemporaneity of\u00a0Modernism: Literature, Media, Culture<\/em> and many others.
